Dear colleagues!
In the second half of 2026, a thematic issue of the scientific journal “HUDPROM: Ukrainian Journal of Art and Design” dedicated to art restoration will be published.
A modern art conservator-restorer is a specialist whose professional activity lies at the intersection of various disciplines. They possess thorough knowledge of modern and historical restoration methods and techniques, materials science and technologies, are knowledgeable in art history, apply research methods for artworks, and interpret the obtained results in practice. The extremely important and demanding, yet often little-known activity of art restorers requires comprehensive coverage and popularization.
The актуалізація of restoration activity in Ukraine is largely caused by the consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Cultural, historical and artistic heritage objects have suffered large-scale destruction, which has intensified restoration processes. Despite hostilities, restoration and conservation works, preventive conservation measures, evacuation and transportation of artworks, as well as training and advanced qualification of restorers are carried out in Ukraine. Ukrainian specialists will shape post-war cultural heritage recovery strategies.
During wartime a significant event also took place — the 30th anniversary of the Department of Restoration and Expertise of Artworks of KSADA, marked by an international conference. The planned special issue aims to demonstrate the dynamics of restoration development in Ukraine, document war-related losses, outline post-war recovery strategies, and determine prospects of restoration education and research.
Authors are invited to submit manuscripts devoted to preservation, research and restoration of artworks. The following thematic areas are accepted:
- history of restoration development in Ukraine and worldwide;
- personalities in the history of art restoration and restoration education;
- restoration education in Ukraine and abroad;
- innovations in restoration practice;
- practical restoration of artworks;
- preventive conservation and preservation;
- research and attribution of artworks;
- evacuation of artworks: strategies and problems;
- development strategies for restoration and cultural heritage preservation in Ukraine;
- post-war monument recovery strategies.
Book reviews, catalog reviews, textbooks published within the last three years, scholarly interviews and memoirs of recognized restorers and museum professionals are also accepted.
Manuscripts must be submitted through the journal “HUDPROM” website in accordance with the established submission procedure.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact the invited scientific editor of the issue, Viacheslav V. Shulika, PhD in Art Studies, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Restoration and Expertise of Artworks shulikavv@ukr.net, or the editorial office of the journal “HUDPROM” (included in the List of Ukrainian professional electronic publications, category “B”, specialties B2 – Design and B4 – Fine Arts and Restoration)editorksada@gmail.com.
